Description: Sergey Taneyev's musical trilogy Oresteia (composed 1887-94, first performance 1895) stands out from the rest of his large output, as well as from other late nineteenth-century Russian music, because of its choice of subject. Its contemporaries are such operas as Borodin's Prince Igor, Tchaikovsky's Queen of Spades, Mazeppa, Charodeyka (Enchantress), Rimsky-Korsakov's Mlada, Snegurochka, Noch pered rozhdestvom (Christmas Eve), and Mussorgsky's Khovanshchina and Boris Godunov. Taneyev's choice of Greek tragedy for his opera immediately placed him outside the area in which his colleagues operated-Russian history, folklore, and literature.
